Welcome to the Heat Dome, Generation Z Voters, and Fathers Learn to Braid
In this episode of Southwest Florida in Focus, we explore compelling local stories shaping our community:
Welcome to the Heat Dome: As millions of Americans make their Fourth of July plans, the weather could play a spoiler for some outdoor celebrations. Along with most of the nation, Florida remains in a heat dome that leads to the temperature feeling like it’s in triple digits. WGCU’s Teddy Byrne talks with Irene Sans, a certified meteorologist with the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network about what to expect headed into the holiday.
Voting and the “Digital Generation”: Could the results of this year's midterms come down to one demographic? Almost half of young voters cast ballots in the 2024 presidential election, and a group called Protect Democracy is working to get Generation Z voters out to the polls this election season. WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford is joined by Protect Democracy Impact Specialist Lara Hicks for more on their efforts to encourage Gen Z to vote.
Pride Month History: Today marks the end of Pride Month, a 30-day celebration of the culture and struggles that face the LGBTQ+ community. Naples Pride is hoping to foster social change and inform people about the issues some face in Southwest Florida. WGCU's Kate Cronin sits down with Naples Pride Executive Director, Cori Craciun, to learn about the history behind Pride Month.
Fathers Learn to Braid: At Brightwater Lagoon, some fathers of little girls brought out their inner hairdresser. WGCU Culture and Connections Reporter Elizabeth Andarge shares how, with a little help from the Florida Academy Cosmetology School, a simple gesture strengthens the father-daughter connection.
