Birthright Citizenship, Gas Prices Lower, and Collecting One Million Seeds
In this episode of Southwest Florida in Focus, we explore compelling local stories shaping our community:
Birthright Citizenship Upheld: The United States Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship in a landmark decision, striking down President Trump's executive order to deny citizenship to children of undocumented or temporary immigrants. The court ruled that babies born on U.S. soil are automatically subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. WGCU Reporter Mike Braun sits down with Bethany Conrad, assistant professor of political science at Florida Gulf Coast University, to discuss the constitutionality behind the ruling.
Gas Prices Stabilize: In Florida, AAA reports that the average price for a gallon of gas is $3.81, nearly 20 cents cheaper than one month ago. Collier and Hendry Counties are still seeing some of the highest prices throughout the state, but they are expected to drop even more heading into the holiday weekend. WGCU Investigative Reporter Eileen Kelly explains how gas price stability starts in the Middle East.
Books for Collier Kids: As students are out of the classroom for summer break, local organizations are working to make sure the summer slowdown doesn't negatively impact children's learning. WGCU Reporter Youn-Joo Park shares with WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford how Books for Collier Kids is empowering the students it serves.
Beach Renourishment: With more than 800 miles of shoreline, beaches are one of the main staples of the Florida lifestyle. Maintaining those pristine shores has become a regular routine in keeping visitors and locals happy. But as WGCU Senior Environmental Reporter Tom Bayles tells WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford, some beaches are struggling to locate enough of the right quality of sand.
One Million Seeds Conserved: Following years of over-development and damage from numerous storms, many of Florida's native plant species are struggling to survive. To preserve threatened flora, the Naples Botanical Garden has partnered with Rookery Bay to keep Florida green. WGCU's Kate Cronin ventures to Keewaydin Island for a first-hand account of the conservation efforts.
