In this episode of Southwest Florida in Focus, we explore compelling local stories shaping our community:

Final Stretch of The Governor’s Race: The race to be Florida's next governor looks to be coming down to election day, as voters are torn between the two leading candidates. Last month, Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly took part in the Sunshine Economy Summit as they prepared to enter the final stretch of their campaigns. WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford talks with Tom Hudson, CEO of South Florida Public Media Group, about the discussions he had with both candidates at the event.

Witches Take Center Stage: ‘Tis the season for spooky scenes and haunted performances. The Lemon Bay Playhouse is celebrating Halloween with a performance of Gillian Holroyd’s “Bell, Book & Candle.” WGCU Arts Reporter Tom Hall previews the show that became the inspiration for the classic sitcom, “Bewitched.”

Living Life with Visual Impairment: For visually impaired people, daily activities might take a bit more time and thoughtful planning. But they overcome physical limitations to develop their unique talents. WGCU Reporter Youn-Joo Park spoke with two women who are not letting sight issues get in the way of their work and hobbies.

WGCU’s Latest Calusa Documentary: WGCU is releasing its second documentary short in its "Decoding Ancient Florida" series.
We’ll hear a selection of jazz classics performed live in studio ahead of the “Halloween Retro Dance Costume Party” on Oct. 30, 2026, at the Spatini Teabar on Sanibel Island.

The Spatini Teabar is the island’s only live jazz entertainment venue featuring performances by the region’s best professional jazz musicians and national touring guest artists.

Jazz performances at the venue also raise funds to support students studying jazz at FGCU’s Bower School of Music & the Arts through the Sanibel Jazz Society, LLC.

The organization was founded by jazz vocalist and Spatini Teabar owner Amy Sbarro and celebrated its inaugural summer series this year.

Patrons of the “Halloween Retro Dance Costume Party,” are invited to step back into the 1940s with their best Swing era clothes. There will also be a dance floor, along with a dance instructor teaching some basic dance moves from the era during band breaks.
We’ll hear music performed by Amy Sbarra (vocals), Stu Shelton (piano), Nik Bortolussi (clarinet), and Tony Vigilante (drums).

New Federal Reserve Ruling, How Property Taxes are Used, and Hunting Lionfish

In this episode of Southwest Florida in Focus, we explore compelling local stories shaping our community:

Federal Reserve Rules on Interest Increase: The Federal Reserve just announced its decision not to raise the benchmark interest rate. WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford talks with Dr. Victor Claar, a Florida Gulf Coast University economics professor, about the financial impact for your wallet.

How Property Taxes Fund Public Services: Amendment 3 has become one of the most controversial measures on the November ballot. The proposal would make major cuts to homestead property taxes. While the measure does not cut funding for the public education system, it does have some people asking the question: why do they have to pay taxes for schools if they do not have children that are attending? WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford sits down with WGCU Education Reporter Dayna Harpster to break down the answer.

District 19 Election Candidates: The race to represent Southwest Florida in congress has two leading candidates from Fort Myers vying for the District 19 seat. Republican Jim Schwartzel and Democrat Victor Arias will face off in the November 3 election. WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford talks with Arias about his goals if elected. WGCU invited Schwartzel to share his platform with our audience, but he has yet to accept our invitation.

Taking a Stab at the Lionfish Population: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission hosts the annual Lionfish Challenge with the goal is to capture as many lionfish as possible to help reduce the population of the invasive species. WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford chats with WGCU Senior Environmental Reporter Tom Bayles about the record-breaking number of lionfish caught this year.

Healthy Sugar Habits for Halloween: As trick-or-treaters put the final touches on their costumes, the next issue will be which piece of candy will be devoured first. But all that sugar consumption could lead to some health issues you should be aware of. WGCU’s Jennifer Crawford sits down with Dr. Brittany Bruggemann, a pediatric endocrinologist with the University of Florida, to learn how over-consumption of sugar can affect our bodies.

Whether or not we'll ever find irrefutable proof that humans are not alone in the universe is something that has been speculated about since the dawn of humanity. As the scientific age arose — from first crude telescopes to modern space exploration — the idea that actually finding real proof has seemingly come into closer reach. But what happens then? And will irrefutable still be refuted by some? And what would the implications be, from shaking the foundations of some faiths, to adding a new global dynamic to an already tense world? We talk with two people who are part of a new limited-run podcast called "When We Find Them" that talks to people from all backgrounds to try to approach these questions and more.

In this episode of Southwest Florida in Focus, we explore compelling local stories shaping our community:

Local Law Enforcement Comments on Amendment 3: Three constitutional amendments are on the ballot this November, but one is garnering special attention for the promise of lower property taxes. However, law enforcement agencies are cautioning that the bill could have serious impacts on funding for fire stations, police, and public safety services. WGCU’s Mike Walcher talks with Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell about his concerns around Amendment 3.

No Kings Day Protests Across Florida: Over the weekend, the Southwest Florida streets were lined with protestors for a "No Kings" rally. The focus was about voter participation as we're now just weeks away from the Nov. 3 general election. WGCU’s Mike Walcher sits down with WGCU’s Digital News Director Mike Braun to hear the biggest political points for protestors.

New Flu Vaccine Could be More Effective: Flu season starts this month and runs until May. Researchers say they are hoping to lower the number of flu cases by rolling out a new vaccine. WGCU Reporter Kate Cronin talks with Bishoy Rizkalla, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Infectious Disease with Moderna, about the new mRNA vaccine.

Training Program Addresses Healthcare Workforce Shortage: For almost a quarter of a century, the Naples Children Foundation has existed with a mission for the welfare, education, and empowerment of children. But a shortage of healthcare workers is conflicting with their mission. WGCU Reporter Kate Cronin sits down with Kristin Hunt, NCF Healthcare Initiatives Director, and Sarah Zaiser-Kelly, NCF Senior Vice President of Grants and Community Impact, to learn about a new partnership combatting the workforce shortage.

When the Girls Scouts formed 114 years ago, it was during a time before women could vote, and were expected to adhere to strict social norms. The organization would change that by creating new opportunities for young women. This week, local troops from across Southwest Florida are preparing to celebrate Founders Day. WGCU's Jennifer Crawford talks with Mary Anne Servain, CEO of Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, and Girl Scout Ambassador Laniya Honorat about the history of the organization and how it resonates with scouts today.
